Surgeries and Procedures

You may come as many times as you feel necessary. Most patients only come once before the day of the surgery. On the day of surgery, you will see the surgeon before surgery takes place.
How long is the surgery?
Depending on the surgery or surgeries performed, it is usually between one and six hours.
Can I eat, drink or smoke before surgery?
Surgical procedures require that you refrain from eating or drinking anything past midnight the day before the surgery. You should refrain from smoking for three weeks prior to a general anesthetic as well as after the surgery.
Do I need to have blood work done, or any other tests?
This depends on the individual. History, physical and lab investigations are done according to guidelines set by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba. Healthy people under 50 usually require no pre-op tests. The need for tests will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Singh or Dr. Murray.

An anaesthetist will be present during your surgery. He or she will determine which anaesthesia is most suitable for your surgery. We have capabilities for general anaesthesia, spinal anaesthesia, local anaesthesia and local anaesthesia with sedation.

Many things contribute to the recovery period; type of surgical procedure, length of surgery, patient’s health and occupation. After short surgical procedures, recovery time is usually one to four weeks. Lengthy procedures such as an abdominoplasty, will require a longer recovery period.
When can I start exercising again?
Walking is encouraged as soon after the surgery as possible. You should not do any pushing, pulling, lifting or dragging for four weeks after surgery. Other activities depend on the procedure and the individual. The doctor will be able to answer this question more specifically during your consultation.
Is there swelling?
Yes, usually there is swelling after most surgical procedures. The degree of swelling is related to the type of procedure.
